Privacy Policy
Last Updated April 27, 2026
Quast Ventures LLC ("the Company", "we", "us", or "our") operates the CourseQ mobile application and website (the "Service"). We are committed to protecting your privacy and ensuring you understand how your data is handled.
1. Our Local-First Privacy Philosophy
Unlike traditional cloud-based applications, our Service is designed with a local-first architecture. We believe your academic data belongs to you. We do not store your course content, syllabi, or other applied study materials on our servers.
2. Information Collection and Storage
Because the Service operates primarily on your local device, all data you input, upload, or generate - including uploaded syllabi, parsed course schedules, AI-generated summaries, and flashcards - is stored locally on your device or within your private personal cloud storage account (such as iCloud or Google Drive).
We do not maintain a central database of your academic materials. We cannot access, read, or sell your syllabi or flashcards because we do not possess them.
To provide AI Syllabus Assistant features, document text is transmitted securely to third-party AI processors (such as OpenAI) and used solely to parse and organize your syllabus.
For optional Study Group collaboration, CourseQ may store limited collaboration data in secure backend infrastructure to keep members in sync across devices. Collaboration data is used only to operate collaboration features you choose to use and is protected with industry-standard safeguards where supported by providers.
If you do not join or create a Study Group, collaboration storage is not used for your account. You may request deletion of collaboration records in accordance with applicable law and retention requirements.
3. Use of Information
Since we do not collect your personal academic data on our servers, we do not use it for marketing or profiling. Any data processed locally or via API is used strictly to extract dates, assignments, and grade weights, generate flashcards and study aids, and maintain app functionality.
4. Data Security
Because your data is stored locally, security depends on your hardware and personal cloud account security. You are responsible for securing your device and linked accounts.
5. Third-Party Services
Our Service utilizes third-party APIs. We are not responsible for privacy practices of external providers and encourage you to review their privacy policies.
6. Children's Privacy
The Service is intended for higher-education students. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
7. Session Continuity
To reduce unauthorized use of your account, CourseQ may associate your account with a short-lived session lease. When you sign in, the service stores only a cryptographic hash of your internal account identifier (combined with a server secret we do not disclose) and an opaque session token -not your raw email or name solely for this purpose. Only one active lease is honored at a time; signing in from another environment may invalidate the prior session. Free-tier limits. To enforce applicable free-tier limits without creating a profile about you, CourseQ may store simple counters on your device (for example, how many syllabus parses have been used on that installation). This information stays on your device unless otherwise stated elsewhere in this policy.
8. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this policy from time to time by posting the updated version on this page.
